If you have lived in Los Feliz for more than a season, you know the neighborhood does not really do destinations. It does standing appointments. A Wednesday you always spend at the same bar. A Friday walk up to Barnsdall because the wine table is set up again. A Sunday you drift into Little Dom's because you did not plan anything and neither did anyone else. Summer 2026 has quietly reshaped a few of those anchors, and if you are still running last year's routine, you are missing the better version.
Here is what has actually changed on Hillhurst and Vermont, and how to build a week around it.
The Hillhurst walk-in shift
The cocktail bar situation on Hillhurst has been thin for years. That ended in December, when Vandell opened in the old Nossa Caipirinha space. The bar comes from Michael Francesconi and Matthew Glaser of Park Hospitality, the team behind Donna's in Echo Park, working with two Republique cocktail alums. What matters for residents is not the pedigree. It is the operating model.
Vandell is largely walk-in. Some Resys are available, but walk-in guests join a waitlist and are encouraged to explore the neighborhood while they wait. Three experienced hosts manage the room, including a maître d'. That last detail is the tell. Los Feliz has spent a decade watching Silver Lake and Virgil Village build out a reservation-required nightlife economy. Vandell is betting the opposite way, and so far it is working: the bar opened in early December to lines out the door and is still going strong.
The food program is intentionally small. A tightly edited menu of about 12 shareable dishes designed to support the drinking experience rather than compete with it, including a crudo and a bar burger, without committing to a full meal. If you have been treating dinner and drinks as two separate outings, this is the argument for collapsing them.
One caveat for regulars of the old El Ruso taco truck that used to park nearby: El Ruso, which started as a street cart and became a taco truck, has upgraded to a brick-and-mortar taqueria in Studio City. The focus is still their Sonoran flour tortillas, and they have added margaritas and beer, but their truck in Los Feliz will be temporarily closed while the team gets the new location going. Plan the post-Vandell taco walk accordingly.
The Little Dom's question
Little Dom's has always been the neighborhood's default. The interesting move this summer is that it stopped operating as a single restaurant and started operating as a block.
Little Dom's is teaming up with nearby wine bar WONDERWERK for an evening of happy hour pours and fresh seafood specials. The setup starts with $10 glasses of select Big Juicy wines at WONDERWERK from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., then guests head next door to Little Dom's for a one-night-only seafood menu from sister restaurant Little Dom's Seafood. The staging matters. Two doors, one evening, a hard start at WONDERWERK's bar and a soft landing at Little Dom's back booth.
The same weekend brought Disco Vino, an unofficial after-party at Little Dom's bringing California wine, vinyl, and late-night vibes, timed to run after WONDERWERK's programming at Barnsdall Park. If you have been reading Little Dom's as a brunch restaurant, you are two years behind. It is now the closing act of a three-stop night that starts at a wine bar and ends with records.
Friday nights belong to Barnsdall
The single most useful standing appointment in the neighborhood this summer takes no reservation and costs almost nothing to attend. Barnsdall Friday Night Wine Tastings continue every Friday evening at Barnsdall Art Park, where wine, art and sunset views come together on the West Lawn of Hollyhock House, the city's only UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Read that sentence again. The only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Los Angeles is a fifteen-minute walk from most Los Feliz front doors, and on Friday nights the West Lawn turns into a wine table. If your out-of-town relatives are coming through in August, this is the answer to the "what should we do" text before they even send it.
The pattern to notice this summer: the strongest operators in Los Feliz are programming around Barnsdall, not around each other. WONDERWERK ran a Barnsdall event and had Little Dom's absorb the after-crowd. The Writers Festival ends its final Sunday at Barnsdall Art Park. The park is doing the work a downtown would do in a smaller city.
The week Los Feliz turns into a literary town
Block off August 19 through 23. The Los Feliz Writers Festival 2026 is happening August 19 to 23, with a mission to celebrate, empower, and engage writers that live, work, and play in Los Feliz.
The schedule reads like a walking tour of the neighborhood's actual venues, not a hotel ballroom circuit:
- Wednesday opening party at Big Bar Alcove, 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- Thursday personal essay writing at Fred 62, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
- Friday poetry night, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., location in Los Feliz to be announced
- Saturday voice workshop, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
- Sensory writing session at Tabula Rasa
- Sunday writer and activist mixer at Best Fish Tacos, 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- PorchFest Open Mic at Vermont Triangle, 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Journaling stroll and integration at Barnsdall Art Park, 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.
The point is not whether you are a writer. The point is that for five days, the neighborhood's own diner, coffee shop, taco stand, park, and public triangle become programmed venues. If you have been meaning to actually meet the people who live on your block, this is the week the introduction is easier to make than not.
The standing dates worth keeping
A few things run on repeat that deserve to be on the calendar in ink, not pencil.
Cara Hotel, Franklin Avenue. Wednesday Salsa runs 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday Jazz runs 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Wednesday night in particular has become a low-key answer to the question of what to do midweek without driving anywhere. Cara has been quietly turning its lobby into one of the more consistent live-music rooms east of La Brea.
Los Feliz Neighborhood Council. If you care about how the neighborhood actually gets shaped, the meetings are on Hillhurst. The Cultural Affairs Committee meets at Desert Rose, 1700 Hillhurst Ave, and Transportation and Mobility meets there too. One small win worth noting from the past year: a new crosswalk went in at Harvard and Franklin. That is the sort of change residents actually feel, and it is the kind of thing that happens because someone showed up to a Tuesday meeting.
Neighborhood cleanup. The August 1 cleanup ran on Hillhurst at Clayton, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. These are monthly. Coffee across the street after is the unwritten part.
Putting a week together
Here is the version of the week that uses the new geography instead of the old one:
- Wednesday: Salsa at Cara. Late walk home down Franklin.
- Thursday: Walk-in at Vandell, small plates, no plan for after.
- Friday: Barnsdall wine on the West Lawn before sunset.
- Saturday: WONDERWERK happy hour into Little Dom's Seafood next door.
- Sunday: Jazz at Cara in the afternoon. Groceries at the Sunday farmers market on Hillhurst afterward.
None of it requires a reservation more than a day out. All of it is inside a fifteen-minute walk of Hillhurst and Vermont. That is the neighborhood working the way it is supposed to.
